It was my birthday weekend and I had contemplated loc’ing my hair. When I was loose natural I AB-solutely hated doing my hair! I just “could-not” with the co-washing and the moisturizing and the twist-out that lasted One Day! Ugh! Anyways, that random night I decided to two-strand twist my hair and never take them out. (I will tell you why I chose that method over others another time.) I jumped head first into my Loc Journey and learned along the way. (Check out my Transition to Locs YouTube video).
Now that I’m 19 months loc’d I wanted to share a few of my loc tips for my beautiful Loc Chicks!
- Find a good clarifying shampoo. Many times when we are dealing with curly hair we feel like we have to use a certain type/brand of product. That is not true. Use what works for you. I find that Suave shampoo is best for me. It removes oil and build-up from my hair leaving my hair smelling great! It also doesn’t hear that it’s cheap and you can find it at your local grocer. #Pow
- Don’t re-twist too often. This is going to be The STRUGGLE your first year or so. Your locs are going to be frizzy. It’s inevitable. Going from loose natural or relaxed to loc’d, you will be dying to control those edges BUT giving up on that unattainable fantasy will be the first step in your loc journey. It’s not gonna happen, Chile. Locs are meant to be free and organically appealing. Your edges will do their own thing. When you retwist they will appear as though they are behaving the first couple of days. After a while, they will be disobedient… and that’s okay. It has to be okay. Now days I just go with it.
- Hot oil treatment once per month. OMG! This works wonders! I didn’t start doing this until about 6 months ago. It’s really helpful in restoring luster and shine to your hair. Locs have a tendency to look dull and dry easily. Hot oil treatments counteract that and it’s really quick and simple. It’s a must if you use color/dye in your hair.
- Drink lots of water. Mrs. Obama has been trying to tell y’all! You better listen to Mama Obama! Although this is an overall health tip, you would be surprised how drinking water improves the health of your hair, nails and skin. Just do it. Don’t ask questions. Drink water. - Wrap your locs at night. I’m the WORST at this. I hate things on my head. Even if I put a head wrap no, somehow it magically ends up on the floor by morning. If you are like me and can’t keep a head wrap on to save your child’s life, buy a silk pillowcase.
- Moisturize daily. Not only should you put lotion on everyday, you should also moisturize your hair daily. It’s common sense. But, you know what they say. Common sense ain’t so common now is it?
For the most part, locs are one of the most low-maintenance hairstyles you can achieve. As long as you keep them clean and moisturized, you will be able to achieve the “I woke up like this” look just about every day. Yaasss!!
